The Nine Pillars of Wellness Design, Explained

The Nine Pillars of Wellness Design are the nine measurable dimensions through which a residence acts upon the body of the person living inside it: light, air, materials, water, electromagnetic field, sound, temperature, the building's electrical relationship to the earth, and, at the boundary between design and medicine, the filtration burden carried by the body itself. I have spent thirty-one years designing homes for royal families, heads of state and private clients across Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Doha and Riyadh, and for most of that career I would have described my work as the composition of rooms. I no longer describe it that way. What I organise now is a set of environmental systems, each with its own evidence base and failure modes.

Wellness has become a decorating vocabulary, and a rather loose one. When a client tells me they want a wellness home, they usually mean they want to feel better in it, which is a reasonable ambition and an unspecifiable brief. The Pillars turn that ambition into engineering. Each names a channel through which the built environment demonstrably reaches human physiology, sets a target measurable with an instrument, and can be verified after construction rather than merely promised before it. The framework is summarised at the Nine Pillars. What follows is the reasoning underneath it.

Why Nine, and Why These Nine

The number is not arbitrary, and it has grown. For several years the framework had six pillars: light, air, materials, water, electromagnetic quiet and acoustics. Thermal comfort and contrast therapy entered because temperature turned out to be as consequential to sleep as light. Grounding entered because clients asked for it and I would rather specify it honestly, with its evidential limits stated plainly, than pretend it does not exist. Blood filtration entered last, and it is the only pillar ÖND does not deliver, since it belongs to our physician partners rather than to a design studio.

The pillars are interdependent, which is the argument for treating them as a framework rather than a menu. A residence with immaculate circadian lighting and a compressor cycling at 55 decibels outside the bedroom window has solved a third of sleep. I make the wider case in what wellness design actually is, and for its most rigorous expression in what a longevity home is.

Pillar One: Circadian Light Architecture

Light is the signal by which the body knows what time it is, and it is the pillar I address first because everything downstream of sleep depends on it. The receptors that matter are not the ones you see with. Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells govern melatonin, cortisol and alertness, which is why lumens and colour temperature tell you almost nothing useful. The WELL Building Standard's Circadian Lighting Design feature sets the benchmark I use: at least 200 to 250 equivalent melanopic lux during the day, measured on the vertical plane at eye level, and no more than 50 at night. That daytime to night ratio is the whole exercise.

A randomised trial reported through Flinders University found that circadian-informed lighting cut psychomotor vigilance lapses by roughly half and extended measured sleep by 52 minutes. Research on domestic evening light, published via PubMed, found that nearly half of the homes measured carried evening light bright enough to suppress melatonin by fifty percent. The lighting in most beautiful homes is, biologically speaking, working against the occupant every evening.

A Singapore high-rise commission taught me something I now apply widely. The clients, a technology couple in their forties, were frequent long-haul travellers whose jet lag had begun to compound. We installed circadian lighting throughout the primary suite on a fixed local schedule, deliberately not adaptive, so that the residence functioned as a stable anchor rather than a clever one, paired with blackout that could be summoned at any hour. Both reported roughly a full day's faster recovery from long-haul travel. For a travelling household, a fixed anchor outperforms an intelligent system that keeps changing its mind.

Pillar Two: Air Excellence

Air is the one input a person cannot pause, curate or decline, which is the argument for treating it as infrastructure rather than as an appliance. A portable purifier in the corner of a drawing room addresses the air immediately around it and nothing about how air moves through a building, which is governed by ductwork, pressure differentials and the integrity of the envelope.

A double-blind randomised crossover study in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology found that true HEPA filtration reduced indoor PM2.5 by 60 percent and personal exposure by 53 percent, with smaller reductions from filters merely marketed as HEPA-type. Harvard's COGfx research found that cognitive function scores roughly doubled among occupants of enhanced-ventilation buildings, and the WELL Building Standard's air filtration guidance recommends MERV 13 or higher for systems handling outdoor air. I treat that commercial benchmark as a residential minimum.

Filtration, however, is only half of the pillar. Relative humidity outside a band of roughly 40 to 60 percent invites dust mites, mould and microbial growth inside the very ductwork intended to clean the air. An Alpine chalet commission at 1,800 metres makes the point. The family hosted large ski parties and had grown accustomed to guests sleeping badly for their first two nights, with dry-air irritation and mild altitude complaints. We specified zoned oxygenation in the guest suites, whole-chalet humidification tuned to 40 to 50 percent, and hospital-grade filtration sized for wood-stove particulate. Guests began sleeping through their first night. A Dubai penthouse produced the mirror image, where an aggressive cooling system had left family members with sinus complaints within a month. In extreme climates, humidity is frequently the more urgent half of the problem.

Pillar Three: Material Purity and Microplastic Elimination

This is the pillar where luxury has been most comprehensively mis-sold. The materials the trade has marketed as premium for two decades, being nylon and polyester broadloom, microfibre upholstery, so-called vegan leather and acrylic-bound paint, are woven, coated or bound plastic, and they shed continuously into household dust. Foam cushions and carpet underlay are rarely inspected, yet they often represent the greatest volume of synthetic polymer in a room.

The science has moved from an environmental concern to a domestic one. A review indexed via PMC documents carpets, textiles and synthetic materials as major sources of indoor microplastic pollution in dust and air. Researchers publishing in Nature's Scientific Reports detected microplastic particles in the blood of 88.9 percent of the healthy adults studied, at a mean of 4.2 particles per millilitre, with higher loads correlating with changes in coagulation and inflammatory markers. The Global Wellness Institute reports that the EPA and HHS have launched a $144 million research programme precisely because these particles have been found in human blood, brain tissue and placenta.

I am careful about what this licenses me to claim. These findings describe presence and correlation, not a proven disease pathway, and I do not tell a client that removing a carpet will prevent anything. What I do say is that a documented, addressable exposure route inside a home is a specification problem, and specification is my profession. ÖND's standard is that natural or verified low-shedding materials are the default in every category. A Mayfair pied-à-terre commission showed how invisible the load can be, since the client's recurring fatigue on arrival at his own recently renovated flat resolved once we replaced the synthetic carpet, adhesives and paint, a case set out in the cost of a longevity home. Pillar Four: Water as Luxury Utility

Municipal treatment makes water safe for a population. My work is to make it excellent for a household, and those are different thresholds. A study reported by NPR found that PFAS compounds could be present in nearly half of United States tap water, and research summarised by the University of Birmingham has detected them in tap and bottled water worldwide. Disinfection byproducts are a second category, and both are addressed by the same architecture: sediment pre-filtration, carbon, advanced filtration sized to household demand, and, critically, remineralisation.

Remineralisation is the stage most systems skip, and I regard it as non-negotiable. Reverse osmosis is superb at removing contaminants and equally superb at removing the calcium, magnesium and trace elements that give water its taste. Water stripped of everything is not the standard I am building towards. A kitchen-only system also leaves the largest daily exposure unaddressed, since chlorine and its byproducts volatilise in hot shower water. This is why the specification begins at the point of entry.

A new-build private wing of a royal residence on the Doha coast shows how the pillar behaves inside a complete commission. The existing residence was aesthetically extraordinary and physiologically uncomfortable, with measurable HVAC dryness and visiting family complaining of poor sleep. Alongside humidity control held between 45 and 55 percent, we specified a whole-house system with reverse osmosis, remineralisation and molecular hydrogen stations at the two primary hydration points. The family reported better sleep within the first extended stay. Water rarely operates as an isolated fix, and in an integrated commission it changes how a residence feels rather than merely how it tests.

Pillar Five: Electromagnetic Quiet

This is the pillar I am asked about most sceptically, and the one where I am most careful to represent uncertainty honestly. A review in Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience found the human evidence on low-frequency fields and melatonin inconsistent, with no reliable dose-response relationship. A cohort of 955 participants published via PubMed found no clear evidence that residential radiofrequency exposure affects sleep quality, and a 2024 double-blind study in Frontiers in Public Health supports the same reading. When Dr. Lobe and I discuss electromagnetic protocols with a client, we are candid that we are practising precaution rather than treating a diagnosis.

What is not uncertain is the value of a calm, low-stimulation sleeping environment. The highest-leverage decisions cost nothing exotic: hardwire the residence, remove transmitters from sleeping quarters, and site the router in a mechanical room rather than beside a headboard, since field strength falls off with the square of distance. Shielding comes after measurement, never before it, because unverified shielding is theatre.

A principal residence within a Riyadh family compound illustrates the discipline. The principal had endured years of restless sleep in a beautifully appointed suite that sat directly against the property's communications and security infrastructure hub. A survey identified elevated ambient radiofrequency and dirty-electricity signatures in the sleeping quarters. We applied shielded paint and window film on the sleep-side walls, hardwired ethernet with wireless routed away entirely, electrical filtration on the suite circuit, and acoustic decoupling of the shared wall. He reported his first sustained improvement in sleep in years within a fortnight. The aim is never a technology-free house. It is a bedroom that is quiet in every register.

Pillar Six: Acoustic Serenity

Acoustics rests on some of the strongest public health evidence of the nine pillars, and receives the least serious specification in luxury construction. The WHO Night Noise Guidelines for Europe identify 40 decibels as the lowest observed adverse effect level for night noise, with no meaningful biological effects below 30. The WHO noise fact sheet recommends indoor bedroom levels below 30 dB(A), and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health cites that data in ranking noise as the second-largest environmental health hazard in Europe after air pollution.

I therefore brief acoustic consultants with a documented night-time target rather than a request for quiet, and I design for peak events rather than averages, since a room averaging 28 decibels that spikes to 55 every time a compressor cycles is worse than one holding a steady 32. The four techniques are mass, decoupling, absorption and mechanical silencing, and all four appear in every principal bedroom I design. I insist the consultant joins at schematic stage, because where a suite sits relative to a lift shaft is an architectural decision, not a finish decision.

A nineteenth-century hôtel particulier in Paris is the clearest demonstration I can offer. The owners, a collector couple in their sixties, one recovering from a cardiac event, had a house of extraordinary beauty into which street noise passed unimpeded through original single glazing. We specified secondary interior glazing calibrated for acoustic mass, a silenced ventilation system, wool and linen in place of the previous synthetics, and circadian lighting integrated invisibly into the original mouldings. Post-work measurement put the bedroom noise floor at 28 dB(A), down from 45. A documented decibel target, verified after construction, is what separates acoustic design from acoustic decoration.

Pillar Seven: Thermal Comfort and Contrast Therapy

Temperature is a signal, not merely a comfort setting, and the pillar has two halves. The first is the sleeping environment, where a cool bedroom, calibrated and held rather than left to a thermostat's mood, belongs in the same specification as the blackout and the noise floor. Thermal comfort is one of the ten concepts codified in the WELL Building Standard, which is a useful reminder that it is a measurable performance domain rather than a preference.

The second half is deliberate contrast, meaning sauna and cold immersion used as a sequence. The clinical literature on heat and cold exposure is an active field rather than a settled one, and I leave protocol design to our physician partners. What I can speak to is the architecture. Industry reporting on ultra-luxury alpine properties describes flagship residences carrying multi-room thermal environments, with Finnish saunas, cold plunges and infrared cabins in place of the single sauna of a decade ago (Co-Ownership Property), a 2026 guide to Swiss properties describes full hydrotherapy circuits as now standard (GuestLee), and coverage of ultra-high-net-worth buying notes cold plunges have become an ordinary request (Yahoo Lifestyle).

An Aspen recovery retreat commission taught me the lesson that matters. The client, a biotech founder, wanted a residence supporting ski-week recovery without any spa aesthetic whatsoever. We engineered the cold plunge, infrared sauna and hyperbaric alcove as one suite with shared mechanical infrastructure, ventilation and water treatment, designed to disappear architecturally when closed, with acoustic separation from principal living so protocols could run at any hour. He reports his recovery from long ski days has shortened by roughly a day compared with previous residences that held the same equipment as unrelated purchases.

Pillar Eight: Grounding and Earthing

Grounding, sometimes called earthing, is the practice of maintaining conductive contact with the earth's surface potential, delivered architecturally through conductive stone and unsealed timber floors tied to earth via copper rods, grounded sleep systems, and terraces surfaced for barefoot contact. I include it because it is a low-cost, low-risk intervention clients ask for, and because I would rather specify it properly than watch someone buy an unverified product online.

I will be plain about the evidence, as I am with clients. The published research on grounding is thinner than I would like. A small body of work suggests measurable effects on inflammatory markers and on sleep-related autonomic activity, but it does not sit near the weight of the literature behind light, air or noise, and I do not present it as though it does. I treat grounding as a considered addition, not a headline intervention. What I insist on is the engineering discipline surrounding it, since a grounded bed system is only as good as the earth continuity behind it, and I have found faults in a property's own wiring more often than problems requiring an exotic remedy. Where a client wants it, the sequence is measurement of the electrical baseline first, specification second, verification third, as applied in our audit.

Pillar Nine: Blood Filtration and Detoxification

The ninth pillar is the only one ÖND does not deliver, and I want that stated without ambiguity. Blood filtration therapies, being Eboo, Ebo2 and Pharisas apheresis, are clinical procedures conducted under the supervision of licensed physicians and available by referral through Dr. Thom Lobe and Dr. Fouad I. Ghaly. Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors does not administer medical treatments, and no designer should.

It belongs in the framework nonetheless, because it completes the logic of the other eight. Even in a residence engineered to the standard described above, a body arrives carrying the burden of years of prior exposure, and the pillars can only govern what a home introduces from the day it is finished. A clinical intervention is diminished if the patient returns to an environment that quietly reintroduces what the therapy removed, which is why I regard the eight environmental pillars as the condition under which the ninth holds. If there is a single idea holding the nine together, it is that a home is a system of exposures, continuous and cumulative, and that most of them are invisible in a photograph. This is why I resist the word amenity. An amenity is a room you visit. A pillar is a condition you live inside, sixteen hours a day, for years. The framework exists so that the conversation with a client can be specific: a melanopic lux target by room, a verified air change rate, a documented material schedule, a measured radiofrequency baseline, a decibel figure for the bedroom, a thermal protocol reviewed by a physician rather than invented by a designer.

I did not arrive at nine pillars through a marketing exercise, and I do not regard the number as permanent. It was six, it is nine, and it will change again as the evidence changes, because a framework that never revises itself is a brand rather than a standard. The discipline does not change: measure before specifying, specify against a published benchmark where one exists, say plainly when one does not, and verify after construction rather than at the point of sale. Nine pillars, engineered together, do not promise a cure, and I would distrust any designer who told you otherwise. What they deliver is a residence that has stopped working against the body inside it.
