Whole-House Water and Air Filtration, Properly Done

There is a filter jug in the refrigerator of nearly every house we survey. It treats perhaps two litres a day. Meanwhile the household bathes, showers, brushes, rinses, launders and fills a kettle from twelve or fifteen untreated outlets — and inhales, in a hot shower, whatever is volatile in the supply, at a far greater rate than drinking would ever deliver.

The same error governs air. A handsome portable purifier stands in the drawing room, cleaning one volume of one room, while the adhesives, boards, sealants, paints and textiles of the other twenty rooms off-gas continuously into a sealed envelope. Filtration is not an appliance. It is an infrastructure decision, and it is taken at the point where the services enter the building.

Water: Point of Entry Before Point of Use

Every properly specified house has two water strategies, not one, and they do different work.

Point of entry treats the whole incoming main, before the manifold, so that every tap, shower, bath and appliance in the residence receives treated water. Its purpose is to remove sediment, to remove chlorine and chloramine and their by-products, and to protect the plumbing and the skin of everyone in the house. This is the stage that matters most and the one almost always omitted.

Point of use then polishes drinking water at two or three positions — kitchen, pantry, a bar — to a higher standard than it would be sensible or economic to deliver to a lawn irrigation line.

The Stages, in Order

Sediment first — a graded depth filter taking out particulate that would otherwise destroy everything downstream. Then activated carbon, in block rather than loose granular form, with sufficient contact time at design flow to remove chlorine, chloramine, disinfection by-products and a broad range of organic compounds. Then, at the drinking positions only, reverse osmosis: a semi-permeable membrane rejecting dissolved solids, fluoride, nitrate, heavy metals including lead and arsenic, and the great majority of microplastic and nanoplastic particulate.

Reverse osmosis removes minerals along with contaminants, which is why a bare RO tap yields flat, faintly unpleasant water. Remineralisation is therefore part of the specification, not an upsell: a calcium and magnesium cartridge downstream of the membrane restores mineral content, corrects the pH and, quite incidentally, makes the water taste like something. Ultraviolet sterilisation follows where the supply is a well or a private source. Components should carry NSF International certification against the relevant standard, which states what a filter actually removes rather than what its marketing implies.

The Pipes the Water Arrives Through

There is little sense in filtering a supply and then conveying it through a material that contributes to it. In a longevity-forward specification the wet runs are copper, stainless steel or glass; storage is glass or stainless; and plastic pipework — particularly on hot runs, where temperature accelerates leaching — is designed out wherever the fabric allows. Kettles, jugs and refrigerator lines follow the same rule. It is invisible, and it is one of the very few decisions in a house that cannot be retrofitted cheaply later.

Why Do Cardiologists Say Don't Drink Bottled Water?

This question is now asked of us directly, and it deserves a plain answer rather than an evasive one.

No responsible physician claims that bottled water causes heart disease. What has changed is the evidence on plastic particulate. Research at Columbia University using advanced imaging found that bottled water contains far more plastic than earlier counting methods had detected — hundreds of thousands of fragments per litre, the overwhelming majority of them nanoplastics small enough to have been invisible to previous techniques. Separately, research published in The New England Journal of Medicine reported that patients whose carotid plaque was found to contain micro- and nanoplastics went on to experience a higher rate of heart attack, stroke and death from any cause than those whose plaque did not. That finding is an association rather than a demonstrated mechanism, and the authors said so. It is nonetheless the reason a cardiologist may now advise a patient to stop drinking from plastic.

To which add the ordinary chemistry: bottles left in warm delivery lorries or sunlit kitchens leach more, and single-use PET degrades with handling. The answer is not a better brand of bottle. It is a properly filtered house and a glass carafe. Persistent cardiovascular concern is, always, a matter for a qualified physician.

Air: H14, and Why H13 Is Not the Same Thing

High-efficiency filtration is classified under EN 1822, and the classification is tested at the most penetrating particle size — the diameter at which a filter performs at its very worst, rather than at a convenient average. An H13 filter must capture 99.95 per cent of particulate at that size. An H14 filter must capture 99.995 per cent. The two figures look almost identical and are not: H14 permits one tenth of the leakage of H13. Over a whole-house air handling plant running continuously, that difference is measured in grammes of fine particulate a year.

The specification therefore reads: coarse pre-filter to protect the expensive stage, H14 HEPA at the air handling unit sized for the design flow so pressure drop does not defeat it, and — the stage most often forgotten — a deep bed of activated carbon. HEPA is a mechanical filter. It captures particles. It does nothing whatever for gases, and formaldehyde, benzene, toluene and the rest of the volatile load are gases. A house with immaculate particulate figures and no carbon is half filtered. The US Environmental Protection Agency has long observed that indoor concentrations of many organic pollutants run well above outdoor concentrations.

Then humidity. We hold interiors between 45 and 55 per cent relative humidity — dry enough to suppress mould and dust mite, moist enough to protect the mucosal barrier of the airway, stable enough to keep timber, veneer and plaster from moving. Below 40 per cent the airway dries and fine particulate stays airborne longer. Above 60 per cent the building begins to grow things.

Material Purity: The Source You Cannot Filter

Filtration removes what is already in the air. It is a far better discipline not to introduce it, and this is where interior design carries responsibility that no plant room can discharge.

Every commission carries a written finishes and adhesives schedule. Low-VOC paint throughout, and genuinely low — a certified figure in grammes per litre, not the phrase on the tin. Water-based, solvent-free adhesives. Solid timber or formaldehyde-free boards in place of standard composite panels, since urea-formaldehyde carcase material off-gasses for years behind the most beautiful door front in the house. Natural oils, waxes and mineral plasters rather than polyurethane. Wool, linen, cotton and silk carrying GOTS or OEKO-TEX certification, with no stain-repellent or flame-retardant treatment applied after the fact. And no synthetic fragrance anywhere — including in the cleaning regime handed to household staff, remarkably often the largest single source of volatile organic compounds in an otherwise faultless house.

Questions We Are Asked

Is a whole-house HEPA air purifier better than portable units?

For a designed residence, yes — decisively. A whole-house H14 stage at the air handling unit treats every volume continuously and invisibly, whereas portable units treat single rooms and only while running. Portables remain useful in a rented flat, or as a supplementary measure in a bedroom, but they cannot address a building that is off-gassing into a sealed envelope.

Do I need whole house water filtration if I already have reverse osmosis?

Almost certainly. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap treats drinking water only. It does nothing for the shower, the bath, the laundry or the appliances — and a hot shower delivers volatile compounds by inhalation and through the skin in far greater quantity than a glass of water delivers by mouth. Point of entry treats the house; point of use polishes the drinking positions. Both are needed.

Does low VOC paint actually make a difference?

Yes, and it is one of the least expensive improvements available in any house. Conventional paint releases solvent for weeks and, in some systems, at a lower rate for far longer. The difference is measurable in indoor air within days of application. Insist on a certified figure in grammes per litre rather than the words on the tin, and apply the same discipline to primers, adhesives and sealants, which are frequently worse than the paint and are never mentioned.

What does a non toxic home actually require?

Four things, in order: treated water at the point of entry with polished drinking positions; H14 particulate filtration with a deep activated carbon bed for gases; humidity held between 45 and 55 per cent; and a written schedule of low-emission finishes, adhesives, boards and certified textiles so that the sources are never introduced. Add the removal of synthetic fragrance from the cleaning regime. Filtration without material discipline is an endless and expensive argument with your own specification.
