Your Bedroom Textiles Are in Your Blood

You spend a third of your life in direct contact with your bedding. No other material in the house touches you for so long, so intimately, or so unguarded. And in a great many otherwise faultless houses, that bedding is plastic.
Polyester. Nylon. Acrylic. Microfibre, marketed as a virtue. These are petroleum derived textiles, and they behave like it. A single domestic wash of synthetic fabric has been measured releasing in the order of 700,000 microfibres, a figure established by Napper and Thompson at the University of Plymouth. Those fibres leave with the water. Others do not: they shed dry, into the air of the room, throughout the night, for the entire life of the textile.
What the Evidence Actually Establishes
I want to be precise here, because this subject attracts a great deal of loose language and the science is strong enough that it does not need any.
Plastic particles have been found in human blood. In the first study of its kind, Leslie and colleagues examined twenty two donors and identified quantifiable plastic particles in the blood of seventeen of them, which is seventy seven per cent. Not every sample. Seventeen of twenty two. The correct figure is more than sufficient.
Particles have since been identified in human placental tissue, and in 2025 Nihart and colleagues reported micro and nanoplastics in human brain tissue at concentrations exceeding those found in liver and kidney. Most consequentially, Marfella and colleagues, publishing in the New England Journal of Medicine, reported that patients in whom micro and nanoplastics were detected within carotid plaque went on to experience a higher rate of myocardial infarction, stroke and death from any cause than those in whom none were found.
That last finding is an association, not a demonstrated mechanism, and its authors were careful to say so. It is nonetheless the study that moved microplastics from a matter of environmental tidiness to a matter of clinical interest.
Why the Bedroom Is the Worst Room for This
Indoor air carries roughly eight times the microplastic load of the air outdoors. The United States Environmental Protection Agency observes that we spend approximately ninety per cent of our lives indoors. Cox and colleagues estimated annual human inhalation at between 35,000 and 69,000 particles.
Now consider the specific circumstances of a bedroom. The room is enclosed for eight hours. Ventilation is typically at its lowest of the day. Your face rests directly against a woven surface. Every movement across the night agitates the fibre bed and lofts particulate into precisely the volume of air you are breathing. A synthetic mattress topper, a polyester duvet, a microfibre sheet and a nylon carpet compound one another.

The Material Standard We Specify
Every commission carries a written textile schedule. It is not a preference. It is a specification, and it is enforced through to installation.
Bedding and bed linen. Long staple cotton, linen, or mulberry silk. Nothing else reaches a bed. Percale or sateen weave in cotton, washed linen where a softer hand is wanted. No polyester content whatsoever, including in the stitching and the piping, which is where synthetics most often survive an otherwise careful schedule.
Mattress and topper. Natural latex, organic cotton and wool. Wool is the quiet hero of a longevity bedroom: it is naturally flame resistant, which removes the argument for chemical flame retardant treatment altogether, and it regulates humidity against the skin better than any engineered fibre yet produced.
Upholstery and drapery. Wool, linen, cotton, silk velvet. Silk drapery, precisely pleated, holds a line better than any synthetic and does not shed.
Floor. Wool carpet on a natural jute or hessian backing, or stone and hardwood with wool rugs. Nylon broadloom is designed out.
Certification. GOTS or OEKO TEX on every textile, and no stain repellent or flame retardant finish applied after the fact. A certified natural fibre treated with a fluorochemical topcoat is not a natural fibre any longer.
What Filtration Can and Cannot Do
An H14 HEPA stage at the air handling unit captures 99.995 per cent of particulate at the most penetrating particle size, and smaller particles more efficiently still, which is a point the marketing literature routinely inverts. It is an excellent thing to have. It is not a solution to a synthetic bedroom.
Filtration removes what has already entered the air. Specification prevents it entering. The second discipline is cheaper, permanent, and requires no maintenance schedule. A house that filters diligently while shedding continuously is in an expensive argument with itself.

Questions We Are Asked
Is bamboo or eucalyptus bedding a natural fibre?
Usually not, in any meaningful sense. Most bamboo and eucalyptus textiles are viscose or lyocell, which is to say cellulose dissolved in solvent and extruded as a filament. Lyocell produced in a genuinely closed loop process is a reasonable material. Conventional bamboo viscose is not, and the word bamboo on a label tells you nothing about which you have been sold. Cotton, linen, silk and wool require no such interrogation.
Does washing synthetic bedding less often reduce shedding?
It reduces the fibres released to wastewater. It does nothing for the dry shedding into the air of the bedroom, which is the exposure that matters to the person sleeping in it. The material is the problem, not the laundry cycle.
What should be replaced first?
The bed, in this order: sheets and pillowcases, then the duvet and pillows, then the topper, then the mattress. The surfaces in direct and prolonged contact with skin and airway deliver the greatest return for the smallest expenditure. The carpet follows. Drapery and upholstery are a slower programme and can wait for a natural refurbishment cycle.

It is inexpensive relative to almost anything else in a commission, it is entirely within a household's control, and it addresses eight hours of continuous, unguarded exposure every single night.
