Microplastics in Your Home: The Silent Crisis
By Kenneth Bordewick, Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors · In clinical collaboration with Dr. Thom E. Lobe MD and Dr. Fouad I. Ghaly MD

Researchers have detected microplastics in the bloodstream of 17 of 22 adult donors tested: 77 per cent of those examined. Not in industrial workers or factory towns. In ordinary people, living in ordinary homes. The question is not whether microplastics are present in your environment. It is how many, and what you intend to do about it.
At Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors, we have spent years working at the intersection of bespoke interior design and human health. Together with our clinical partners, Dr. Thom E. Lobe MD and Dr. Fouad I. Ghaly MD, who collaborate across every residential and commercial commission undertaken by the firm, we have developed an approach that addresses what most luxury firms prefer not to discuss: the biological environment within your walls.
What the Research Reveals
Leslie et al., writing in Environment International in 2022, found microplastics in the blood of 17 of 22 donors tested: 77 per cent of those examined. Cox et al. (Environmental Science & Technology, 2019) calculated that the average adult ingests between 39,000 and 52,000 microplastic particles per year through food and drink alone. When inhalation is included, that figure rises to between 74,000 and 121,000 particles annually. Ragusa et al., publishing in Environment International (2021, Volume 146, Article 106274), detected microplastics in human placental tissue: evidence that this contamination reaches the most protected biological environments we possess.
These are not hypothetical risks or distant industrial concerns. They are present, measurable, and, with the right design approach, significantly reducible.
The Home as a Primary Source of Exposure
The materials from which a home is constructed, furnished, and finished are among the primary contributors to indoor microplastic burden. Synthetic carpets shed fibres with every footfall. Vinyl flooring fragments over time. Painted surfaces release microparticles as they age. Plastic plumbing leaches particles into drinking water. The air circulating through an unfiltered HVAC system carries a measurable load of synthetic particles with every breath drawn within.
A non-toxic home is not simply one that avoids obvious chemical hazards. It is one whose every surface, finish, and fitting has been selected with material purity as a foundational criterion. This is the standard we apply to every commission, whether a quiet luxury interior design in Beverly Hills, a penthouse interior design in London, or a palace interior design in Dubai.
“The healthiest home is one in which the design decisions have already been made on your behalf: where purity is built in, not added later.”
— Kenneth Bordewick, Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors
The ÖND | Life's Breath™ Material Purity Protocol
Through our ÖND | Life's Breath™ wellness design principles, we have codified a material purity protocol that eliminates synthetic microplastic sources at every layer of the built environment. The protocol applies equally to BHLI residential commissions and to ÖND-branded wellness environments, in full clinical collaboration with Dr. Thom E. Lobe MD and Dr. Fouad I. Ghaly MD.
Flooring and Surfaces
Natural stone, solid hardwood, and hand-applied mineral plaster replace synthetic alternatives entirely. Our mirror-polished marble floors and lacquered hardwood panels are not merely beautiful. They are inert, non-shedding, and non-toxic surfaces that contribute zero microplastic load to the indoor environment. From book-matched Calacatta marble in the master suite to parquet de Versailles in the grand salon, every surface is selected for its biological credentials as rigorously as its aesthetic ones.
Textiles and Furnishings
Silk, wool, linen, and cashmere replace polyester and nylon in every upholstered surface, curtain, and textile. The silk velvet drapery and precisely tailored silk curtains that define our healthy home aesthetic are not selected for visual reasons alone. Natural fibres shed no synthetic microparticles into the air your household breathes. The distinction between a high end interior design that looks magnificent and one that actually protects your biology lies, in considerable measure, in this single decision.
Air and Water Filtration
H14-grade HEPA air filtration captures particles as small as 0.1 microns, removing microplastics in blood-equivalent concentrations from circulating indoor air. Whole-home water filtration systems with sub-micron filtration address microplastics in water at every point of use, from the kitchen to the master bath. Copper and glass plumbing replaces plastic pipe wherever possible, eliminating leaching at source.

Architectural Finishes
Off-gassing synthetic paints and synthetic sealants are replaced with mineral-based limewash, Venetian plaster, and natural lacquers. Every finish specified by Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors is reviewed for material purity as a matter of course. This is not an optional premium tier. It is the standard, applied uniformly from Beverly Hills to Mayfair and from Palm Desert to the residences of the Gulf.
The Invisible Architecture of Health
Kenneth Bordewick, founder of Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors and ÖND | Life's Breath™, has spent over 25 years demonstrating that the highest standard of wellness design and the most rigorous standard of luxury are not in competition. They are, in fact, inseparable. The materials that protect your biology are invariably the materials that endure, that deepen with time, and that define the spaces within which a life of genuine distinction is lived.
Our clinical partners, Dr. Thom E. Lobe MD and Dr. Fouad I. Ghaly MD, bring physician-level understanding to every commission across the full breadth of BHLI and ÖND, ensuring that the biological environment is as carefully considered as the aesthetic one. When a residence is completed at the BHLI standard, it is completed for both beauty and biology simultaneously.
Commission Your Longevity Home Wellness Design Audit
The first step toward a non-toxic, microplastic-reduced home is understanding your current exposure profile. Our Longevity Home Wellness Design Audit assesses every element of your home's biological environment: materials, air quality, water quality, filtration systems, textiles, and finishes. Developed in clinical collaboration with Dr. Thom E. Lobe MD and Dr. Fouad I. Ghaly MD, the audit delivers a prioritised, actionable roadmap for eliminating the invisible threats that most luxury firms never address.
